Should applications know they're running on Kubernetes?

Some apps call the Kubernetes API directly for config or leader election. Others stay completely unaware. Which ages better?

Unaware, by default. Environment variables, files and signals work everywhere and are easy to test locally.

Leader election is the exception I keep hitting. The Lease API is simply the easiest option.
