The interesting part of native sidecars isn't startup

Everyone talks about sidecars starting before the main container. The bigger change for me is shutdown ordering — sidecars now stop after the app, so log shippers and proxies stop losing the last requests.

Agreed. Jobs with a mesh proxy were the real pain. The pod never completed because the proxy kept running.

Exactly, and that hack of killing the proxy from the app is finally unnecessary.

Worth noting they are declared as init containers with restartPolicy: Always. That confuses people reading manifests the first time.
